The Great Sin - 큰 죄

 "Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited."   ( Romans 12:16 , NIV )

"서로 마음을 같이 하며 높은데 마음을 두지 말고 도리어 낮은데 처하며 스스로 지혜 있는 체 말라."   ( 로마서 12:16)

In his book Mere Christianity, C. S. Lewis, calls pride "the great sin." He writes, "Pride is essentially competitive is competitive by its very nature . . . . Pride gets no pleasure out of having something, only out of having more of it than the next man."

'순전한 기독교'에서 C. S. 루이스는 교만은 큰 죄라고 했습니다.  "교만은 근본적으로 경쟁적입니다. 즉 남과 비교하는 것이 교만의 본질입니다..... 교만한 마음은 무엇을 가져서가 아니라 오로지 옆 사람보다 가진 것이 더 많은 데서 기쁨을 얻습니다."

This drive to lift ourselves above others isolates us from them and makes it too easy to disregard or even harm them. Because his pride was wounded when God honored his brother's sacrifice but not his own, Cain killed Abel. Because his pride was challenged by the demands of Moses, Pharaoh refused to let the people of Israel go free even though Egypt was being destroyed around him. Because his pride was affronted by Mordecai's refusal to kneel down and honor him, Haman plotted to kill not only Mordecai but all the people of Israel (Esther 3:1-6).

남보다 자신을 높이려는 이런 욕망 때문에 자신을 다른 사람에게서 구별하여 그들을 무시하거나 해롭게까지 하기가 쉽습니다. 하나님이 동생 제사를 받으시고 자신의 것은 거부하시자 자존심에 상처를 입은 가인은 아벨을 죽였습니다. 모세의 요구에 자존심이 상하자 바로왕은 애굽이 파괴되는 지경에서도 이스라엘 민족을 자유로이 가게 하지 않았습니다. 모르드개가 무릎을 꿇고 존경을 표하지 않자 하만은 자존심이 상해서 모르드개뿐 아니라 이스라엘 민족 전체를 죽이려 했습니다(에스더 3:1-6).

Contrast these men with Jesus. When criticized by the Pharisees for eating with "tax collectors and sinners," He responded, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners" (Mark 2:17, NIV). Jesus was interested in reaching people, not in lifting himself above them. May we follow His example.

교만한 저들과 예수를 비교해 보십시오. 예수께서 세리와 죄인들과 함께 잡수시는 것을 바리새인이 비난하자 예수께서는 이렇게 대답하셨습니다. “건강한 자에게는 의원이 쓸데없고 병든 자에게 라야 쓸데 있느니라. 내가 의인을 부르러 온 것이 아니요 죄인을 부르러 왔노라 하시니라(막2:17).” 예수는 사람과 사귀기를 원하셨지 저들보다 자신을 높이려하지 않았습니다. 예수가 보인 모법을 따르게 하소서.

Dear Father, help us today to approach our fellow human beings in the humble spirit of Jesus in the hope that we may touch them with His love. In His name we pray. Amen.
